Análisis comparativo de la traducción del humor en los relatos cortos de Antón P. Chéjov

Abstract

[ES] El presente Trabajo de Fin de Grado pretende realizar un análisis comparado de las distintas traducciones de los relatos breves cómicos de Antón Pávlovich Chéjov, centrándose, en concreto, en la traducción del humor entre culturas relativamente alejadas (en este caso, la cultura rusa de la época de Chéjov y la española contemporánea), así como las estrategias utilizadas por distintos traductores para lograrlo y cómo estas afectan al resultado final en lo que respecta al contenido humorístico y cultural del texto. Para ello, se empieza mostrando el estado de la cuestión de la traducción del humor en la literatura en general y en la rusa en particular. A continuación, se da una definición general del humor y su traducción y las distintas dificultades que conlleva traducirlo, seguido por varias estrategias propuestas por expertos en el ámbito para conseguir superar estos obstáculos. Además, se analiza sucintamente el contexto de la obra. Tras una breve biografía centrada en la época que atañe a los textos que se van a analizar, se realiza el análisis comparado. Para ello, se presenta y resume cada cuento y se considera qué es lo que causa el efecto cómico en cada uno, después, se cotejan las traducciones para poder extraer las conclusiones y proponer, si es necesario, soluciones alternativas a los problemas de traducción basadas en las estrategias mencionadas anteriormente. Se juzga, además, qué traducción ha tenido más éxito a la hora de transmitir el humor y si se han sacrificado características culturales a favor de mantener la comicidad o si se ha dado el caso contrario. Para ello, se analizan las estrategias utilizadas, teniendo en cuenta lo descrito en el marco teórico. Finalmente, se extraen las conclusiones, centrándose en lo referente al tipo de humor de Chéjov, los juegos de palabras y chistes y cómo afectan las notas al pie y las palabras sin traducir a la recepción del humor y a la ligereza característica de los relatos humorísticos de Chéjov.

[EN] The following thesis dissertation is meant to be a comparative analysis of the translations of Anton Pavlovich Chekhov’s humorous short stories made by different translators. The focus is, specifically, on the translation of humor between cultures that are relatively far apart (in this case, Russian culture during Chekhov’s time and contemporary Spanish culture), the different strategies translators have used to achieve this goal and how those methods affect the final result concerning the humoristic and cultural content of the text. To do so, the thesis dissertation starts by summarizing the state of play regarding the translation of humor on literature in general and of Russian literature in particular. Then, a broad definition of what humor is, how it is translated, and what issues it may bring is given, followed by a series of strategies that experts in the area of study have proposed to overcome or avoid those issues. In addition, the historical context of the texts is briefly explained. After a short biography that focuses on the period in which the texts that are going to be analyzed were published, the comparative analysis is carried out by introducing and summarizing each of the short stories and evaluating what causes their comical nature. Then, the different translations are compared to draw out the conclusions and suggest alternative solutions to issues related to the translation of humor if needed, considering the aforementioned strategies. The success on communicating humor and if cultural characteristics have been sacrificed in order to maintain the comicalness of the text, or vice versa, will also be judged. To this end, the strategies used will be analyzed, taking into account the theoretical framework. Lastly, conclusions will be drawn, focusing on Chekhov’s brand of humor, puns and jokes, and the effect that footnotes and untranslated terms have on the reception of humor and the lightness of Chekhov’s short stories.
