Abstract
Semantic Web technologies have been successfully applied to biological and
medical domains in the last few years. Most approaches are based on trans-
lating existing thesauri into ontologies. Even though this allows for the (par-
tial) formalization of the knowledge, the advanced capabilities of ontologies
are not completely exploited. In this work, we present a resource, the OGO
system, that exploits Semantic Web technologies to integrate information
regarding orthologous sequences and genetic diseases, also ensuring consis-
tency and avoiding redundancy, and therefore easing the labour of life science
researchers. The query interface provides a mechanism to define semantic
queries exploiting advanced functionalities from ontologies, maintaining the
user-friendly settings of general query systems.
