El reto de la educación ambiental

Abstract

Environmental education should promote the acquisition of the consciousness, the values and the behaviour that favour the population's effective participation in the process of making decisions. It should become, therefore, a strategic factor for inciting the established development model, in order to reorient ¡t towards sustainability, and equity.However, even though certain awareness has been achieved among the population, we are still far from it having a significant influence on both the daily, habits of the majority of the inhabitants and the political decisions that affect the environmental planification and management.The establishment of a Strategy of Environmental Education can be a tool that would enable to integrate the work of the different agents that act in this field encouraging their work, by giving a global meaning to individual contributions and improving the functioning of the system on the whole.; La educación ambiental debe impulsar la adquisición de la conciencia, los valores y los comportamientos que favorezcan la participación efectiva de la población en el proceso de toma de decisiones. Debe convertirse, por lo tanto, en un factor estratégico que incida en el modelo de desarrollo establecido para reorientarlo hacia la sostenibilidad y la equidad.Sin embargo, aunque se ha conseguido cierta sensibilización de la población, aun nos encontramos lejos de que ésta influya de forma significativa tanto en los hábitos cotidianos de la mayoría de la ciudadanía como en las decisiones políticas que afectan a la planificación y la gestión ambiental.El establecimiento de una Estrategia de Educación Ambiental puede constituir una herramienta que permita integrar la labor de los diferentes agentes que actúan en la materia incentivando su labor, dando un sentido global a las aportaciones particulares y mejorando el funcionamiento del sistema en su conjunto.
