Influencia de la expansión rápida maxilar en la luz de las vías respiratorias altas. Estudio piloto

[ES] El interés de este trabajo reside en la prevalencia de las alteraciones de la vía respiratoria en los pacientes infantiles. Una de las causas más comunes es la llamada respiración oral, que puede ser provocada por múltiples razones como por ejemplo, amígdalas hipertróficas, vegetaciones, etc. Esta alteración en la respiración, puede provocar anomalías en el crecimiento y desarrollo del complejo nasomaxilar, en las cuales se incluyen: cara alargada, altura facial inferior aumentada, base nasal estrecha, bóveda palatina alta, paladar estrecho, compresión maxilar, alteraciones oclusales, etc. La importancia de realizar un tratamiento ortodóncico en estos pacientes se debe a la necesidad de corregir las anomalías mencionadas. El tratamiento más empleado para dicha corrección es la expansión maxilar que consiste en la separación de la sutura palatina media para lograr un aumento de la anchura del paladar, consiguiendo así una armonía entre ambos maxilares. Se emplean con este fin, aparatos fijos (quad-helix, aparato de disyunción) como aparatos removibles (placas de expansión). Este tratamiento consigue la corrección de la compresión maxilar así como de la mordida cruzada posterior uni o bilateral; pero a su vez provoca un aumento del diámetro de la luz de la vía respiratoria, que sin llegar a conseguir resolver la respiración oral, ayuda a la posterior rehabilitación del paciente.
