Socialismo y libertad. El europeísmo español del exilio entre la “tercera vía” y la Guerra Fría (1940-1950)

Abstract

Our goal is to rethink the place that the initiatives of Spanish exiles should occupy in our apprehension of the European movement. Anti-fascist and anti-Stalinist expatriates, with the support of transatlantic intellectual and political networks, laid the foundations in the 1940s for a movement to vindicate federalism and the unification of Europe. The analysis of unpublished documents allows us to approach that essentially informal dimension of European construction. We will thus address the initiatives undertaken by some exiles in Mexico in collaboration with left-wing intellectuals living in New York (1940-1945); the efforts to establish a “third way”, independent of the two superpowers and anchored in the fusion of socialism and freedom (1945-1947); and the slow transformation of these initiatives into a more transversal and plural project, open to collaboration with other European movements (1948-1950).; Nuestro objetivo es replantear el lugar que deben ocupar las iniciativas de los exiliados españoles en nuestra aprehensión del movimiento europeísta. Expatriados antifascistas y antiestalinistas, con el apoyo de las redes intelectuales y políticas de carácter transatlántico, pusieron en los años cuarenta los fundamentos de un movimiento de vindicación del federalismo y de la unificación de Europa. El análisis de documentos inéditos permite aproximarse a esa dimensión esencialmente informal de la construcción europea. Abordaremos así las iniciativas emprendidas por algunos exiliados en México en colaboración con intelectuales de izquierdas afincados en Nueva York (1940-1945); los esfuerzos por establecer una “tercera vía”, independiente de las dos superpotencias y anclada en la fusión de socialismo y libertad (1945-1947); y la lenta transformación de dichas iniciativas en un proyecto más transversal y plural, abierto a la colaboración con otros movimientos europeístas (1948-1950).
