Oyarzun, Oyarzo y Oyarzún

Abstract

The objective of this work is to present etymological versions of the toponym (and later surname) Oyarzun, individualizing each of the variants of this toponymic surname found in several documents in the historical area of Chiloé (Chile), a place currently inhabited by descendants of a Basque emigrant from the valley of the same name. It reveals the discovery and analysis of graphic variants with the presence of an accent mark on the penultimate or last syllable, which certifies that the first pronunciation (according to Basque usage) still existed in the second half of the 19th century, and the second (which is the common form of the name to-day in Chile) had already been documented in the late 18th century; El objetivo de este trabajo es exponer las corrientes etimológicas del topónimo (y luego apellido) Oyarzun, individualizando cada una de las variantes de este apellido toponímico encontra-das en distinta documentación en la zona histórica de Chiloé (Chile), lugar donde existe descendencia actual de un emigrante vasco originario del valle homónimo. Se da cuenta del descubrimiento y aná-lisis de variantes gráficas con tilde en la penúltima o en la última sílaba, lo que certifica que la pri-mera pronunciación (conforme al uso vascongado) existía todavía en la segunda mitad del siglo x i x, y la segunda (que es la denominación usual hoy en día en Chile) ya aparece documentada a fines del si-glo x v i i i.
