Identificación y geolocalización de la arquitectura subterránea en la villa de Castrojeriz, Burgos.

Abstract

[ES] Desde siempre en Castrojeriz se ha tenido conocimiento de la existencia de las llamadas bodegas y galerías en el subsuelo. Sin embargo a día de hoy se desconoce la magnitud de todo el entramado de cámaras y cavidades debido a su carácter privado y a la parcelación de las mismas. Esto ha llevado a especulaciones, hipótesis e ideas varias que aun pudiendo ser ciertas, carecen de cualquier rigor analítico, y más bien han estado fundamentadas por la tradición oral, tanto es así que se tiene más información por la subjetividad de comentarios recuerdos e ideas que por la “certeza” de textos escritos.

Para la realización del estudio se ha dividido la zona en cinco barrios en función de sus parroquias actuales y antiguas. Se han visitado una serie de bodegas de manera que todos los barrios queden representados, recogiendo todos los datos, ya sean los propios de la bodega o los comentarios que su propietario conoce sobre ella. Después de la toma de datos, se ha procedido a buscar similitudes y relaciones, no solo en sus características sino mediante la ubicación sobre un plano la planta de las bodegas, debidamente georreferenciadas, y estableciendo correlaciones entre ellas (estilo, acabados, accesos tapiados y posibles continuidades).

Una vez obtenido un número representativo de datos se pueden empezar a establecer un criterio o al menos poder basarse en datos ciertos en los que poder apoyar las ideas que se tenían o el desarrollo de otras nuevas ideas. Es importante incluir los comentarios de la tradición oral, no son objetivos pero si pueden aproximarse o dar pistas por donde dirigir el estudio, pero siempre teniendo muy presente de prever que no se contamine, evitando que se induzca el estudio hacia ideas que se desconoce su veracidad.

Por las limitaciones del estudio, no se ha podido abarcar todo lo que se quisiera, pero al menos, es un primer paso para que un futuro si se dispone de más medios, tener un avance de por dónde pueden ir futuras investigaciones. No es más que la punta del iceberg de lo que puede estar por venir.

[EN] Traditionally, the inhabitants of Castrojeriz have had knowledge of the so-called “wine cellars” or underground galleries. Nevertheless, up until now, the magnitude of the complete scheme of vaults is unknown due to their private ownership and huge subdivision. This fact has been the origin of a wide range of speculations and hypotheses that –although likely- lack scientific rigour since they only rely on the oral tradition, so much so that there is more information from memories and comments than from written documents.

For the realization of this study, the area was divided in five neighbourhoods according to the limits of the current and traditional parishes. A series of cellars were visited in order to have representation of all neighbourhoods, gathering data from many sources (geometry of the galleries, physical description, oral information from owners and other residents, etc.). After data collection, similarities and relationships were studied, not only regarding individual features but also concerning the location under the current urban fabric.

Only with a meaningful amount of data it will be possible to draw some conclusions about the traditional speculations and to put forward new interpretations. At any rate, oral descriptions are still deemed essential, even taking into account their subjective nature, since they provide useful clues for directing the research, although we need to be careful so as not to contaminate the study with ideas the likelihood of which are ignored.

Due to the limitations of the study, the coverage was not comprehensive. Anyway, it tries to be a first step that can be expanded in the future if more resources are available and a guide for future attempts.
