Evolución de las figuras enfermeras en el hospital Santiago Apóstol de Vitoria durante el siglo XIX

Abstract

[ES] El hospital Santiago se reedifica en nueva planta a inicios del siglo XIX siguiendo el espíritu liberal ilustrado de la Constitución de Cádiz de 1812. Destaca esencialmente la abundante documentación, ordenanzas y reglamentos que regulan el orden interno y las funciones de sus cargos, que permite seguir fielmente la evolución de las figuras enfermeras durante el siglo XIX, momento decisivo en la configuración actual de la profesión enfermera en el que se sientan las bases de su representación futura en cuanto a asociación a género, religión y atribuciones. De la figura heredada del siglo XVIII, el Hospitalero o Síndico, que era auxiliado externamente por el Sangrador, se pasa al Enfermero Mayor en que se unifican ambas figuras en una concepción enfermera absolutamente actual; no obstante, la llegada de las Hijas de la Caridad anulan esta prometedora figura apareciendo entonces el Practicante que, poco a poco va reduciendo sus competencias, independencia y autonomía hasta quedar convertido, a finales del siglo, en un mero auxiliar técnico del médico y el cirujano.

[EN] The hospital of Santiago is rebuilt in new plant at the beginning of the XIXth century continuing the liberal illustrated spirit of the constitution of Cadiz of 1812. It is remarkable the amount of documents that exist to regulate the internal order and the functions of the people in charge, whitch allow to follow the evolution of the roll of the nurses faithfully during the XIX century, this moment is decisive for the actual configuration of the profession as a Nurse in witch the foundations of their future representation are laid regarding to genre religion an powers. The figure of the "Hospitalero" or "Sindico" inherited from the XVIIIth century who was helped by the "Sangrador" (person who takes out the blood) becomes Mayor nurse in whom both figures are unified in the actual conception of nurses. The arrival of the Sisters Mercy override this promising figure, then the student teacher appears and his competencies independence and autonomy are being reduced gradually up to becoming just a technical assistant of the doctor and the surgeon at the end of the century.
