Abstract
This work analyses the structure and the tópoi that are used in the Speech of Antioch or The Beard-Hater written by the emperor Julian the Apostate just before he left Antioch. Although it was formally written to the inhabitants of Antioch, with the intention ofblaming himself, in reality he uses sorne humour mechanisms to make a panegyric ofhimself and, on the contrary, blame the Antiochenes. In that way, he subsequently left his own version on the conflict that there was between him and the Antiochenes.
