dc.description.abstractThis doctoral thesis focuses on the design, fabrication and subsequent characterization of 3D systems that can be used to restore bone lesions. For this purpose, the principles of bone tissue engineering are applied to combine various biomaterials -both natural and synthetic- to develop gels that are suitable for bone regeneration. In order to resemble the native tissue more closely and to improve these systems' characteristics, nanotechnology has been employed by means of the utilization of nanomaterials such as nanoclays or graphene oxide. All formulations or systems created have been extensively evaluated both in vitro and in vivo. Moreover, the first designs based on alginate, hyaluronic acid and MMT have been tested for their use as delivery-platforms. In contrast, self-healing systems based on alginate, polyacrylamide and graphene oxide have been tested for their potential as scaffolds to regenerate bony lesions. All in all, this thesis encompasses the creation and further characterization of novel systems that are suitable for applications in bone tissue engineering.es_ES
